ISRO Gaganyaan Mission: India Prepation for Uncrewed Orbital Test Flight

Antarikshaa Editorial•11 October 2026

India's Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is rapidly advancing towards its flagship human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan. Designed to carry Indian astronauts into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at an altitude of 400 km for a 3-day duration, the program represents a massive technological leap for the nation.

In preparation for the final crewed launch, ISRO is executing a series of rigorous uncrewed test flights (Gaganyaan-1). These missions are intended to validate crucial systems, including the Human-Rated LVM3 (HLVM3) launch vehicle, environmental control systems, orbital module recovery, and the emergency Crew Escape System (CES).

The Orbital Module consists of the Crew Module (habitable space for astronauts) and the Service Module. Safety remains the highest priority, with redundant avionics and advanced deceleration parachutes integrated to ensure safe ocean landing in Indian sea waters upon re-entry.

Once fully operational, the Gaganyaan program will establish India as one of the select nations with independent human spaceflight capability, paving the way for future space station operations and planetary exploration.
